County approves design contract for Hendricks Road extension; construction funding not yet committed

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners on Jan. 21 approved a contract to begin design work on the Hendricks Road extension, a project that would connect the existing termination of Hendricks Road to Old Nassauville Road/County Road 107 and provide a leg to the Amelia Concourse.

Mr. Campanian, the presenter, told the board the work before it was the design phase and that the design contract (listed in the agenda as CM4084) covers the first phase of the project. "What you have before you in tab F is the Hendricks Road extension with the design portion of that project to connect Hendricks Road where it terminates currently over to Old Nassauville Road, County Road 107," he said, and added the item is in the county's capital improvement program.

Commissioner Martin asked when construction would begin. The presenter replied that only design is funded at this time and that construction financing "could" come later from a developer, the school board or the county after design produces firmer cost estimates; staff estimated the design process typically takes about 12 to 18 months. "We don't want to go too far into allocating funding when we're not quite sure where that's going to land," the presenter said.

The board voted to approve the contract on a 4-0 vote. The minutes record the motion carried 4-0; the roll-call vote listing individual votes was not read into the record.

The agenda packet printed a contract amount for CM4084; the figure in the transcript reads as a very large number that appears garbled in the record. County staff clarified during discussion that only design work is funded and that construction would require separate funding decisions.

Next steps: design work will proceed under the approved contract; any decision to fund construction will require separate action and likely additional funding sources or partner contributions.
