Smithfield restores historic Oak Street name after records review

The Town of Smithfield council voted to restore a section of roadway to its historic name, Oak Street, after staff reviewed deeds and municipal records showing the right name had been changed in town GIS and on a sign at some point in the past.
Staff told the council they reviewed deeds dating back to 1969 and that the records consistently referred to Oak Street; staff proposed reinstalling an Oak Street sign and updating GIS entries. Staff estimated the cost for a new sign at about $50 and said the change would not affect existing addresses.
Kim, who reported the findings, said two parcels adjacent to the curb in question are not addressed and the property directly across the stop sign retains a Dogwood address; staff's review indicates no residents will have to change mailing addresses.
A council member moved to restore the Oak Street name; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff said they would coordinate communications and GIS updates and expected to implement the sign change quickly.
