The Board of Public Works approved a $3,467 change order Dec. 4 to cover extra work on the Schutze Building roof after contractor Garland removed an abandoned brick chimney and replaced deteriorated plywood decking and fascia boards.
Brandon, a facilities/engineering staff member introduced during the item, said crews discovered deteriorated wood beneath the roof after the shingles were removed and that about 11 sheets of plywood decking and some fascia/sub‑fascia required replacement. “...it is a smaller dollar amount change order, for what could have been,” he said, summarizing that the extra work was modest compared with the potential scope of repairs if the conditions had been worse.
A board member asked whether tree trimming or removal should be considered when replacing a roof to extend its service life; staff said they have made recommendations to Park & Rec and forestry staff and will follow up with them.
The board moved, seconded and approved the change order. Staff will monitor final costs and report back if additional scope or funding is required.
