The Waukesha Board of Public Works on Jan. 8 voted to add an alternate to the Ross & White Company contract for the Badger Drive bus wash (2311 Badger Drive) to provide a more substantial underbody flush, at a cost of $80,000.
Staff said the underbody flush will help remove salt and road grime that accelerate corrosion and increase maintenance on buses and other fleet vehicles. "Having a bus wash where we can run a bus through at the end of the day and get the salt off of the bottom of the bus is going to be very helpful in extending the life, I would imagine," a staff member said, while also noting they could not provide a precise projection of service-life extension.
A board member said he supported the addition but suggested staff track vehicle-life or maintenance metrics so the city can measure long-term savings. Staff acknowledged those benefits are likely to appear in reduced parts and maintenance costs but said federal replacement schedules and mileage factors also influence replacement timing.
The board moved and seconded the change order to add the alternate and approved it on a voice vote. Staff said multiple fleet vehicles, including fire department vehicles, use the facility and that the added underbody flush would be a more substantial unit than the existing system.
