Staff told the board the process and timeline for the 2027 historic-home recognition calendar, saying nominations will be due March 15, board members will vote in early April, notices to selected homeowners will be sent in April, bridal photos and ad payments are due June 1, and printing is planned for completion by Sept. 1.
Staff suggested possible themes — architectural styles such as midcentury modern, era-specific homes (for example the 1880s–1920s), neighborhood-focused selections such as legacy neighborhoods, or feature-focused pages highlighting stained-glass, ornate porches or chimneys. Staff recommended prioritizing houses that have not appeared on recent calendars to expand representation across the historic survey area (HSA) and legacy neighborhoods.
Board members welcomed the emphasis on legacy neighborhoods. One board member who said she lives in the East Side of McKinney argued those areas are historic and should be better represented. Staff said outreach can include communications-team banners and targeted contacts with neighborhood associations to encourage nominations.
Why it matters: The calendar is a public-facing program that highlights local architectural heritage and can raise awareness of less-noticed historic neighborhoods. Staff emphasized inclusivity of nominations while noting there are no strict eligibility requirements beyond being within the designated historic survey area.
Next steps: Staff will coordinate with communications and neighborhood associations to promote the March 15 nomination deadline and bring a slate of candidates for the board to vote on in April.
