The Waukesha Common Council voted unanimously on Dec. 2 to enter a cooperative agreement to create a countywide overdose-fatality review group to examine trends in overdose deaths and identify prevention opportunities.
A staff presenter said the model is based on a successful Milwaukee County agreement and emphasized that the city's obligation is low beyond a good-faith commitment to cooperate and share information. "The idea here is to create a cooperative agreement where agencies of various disciplines from throughout the county will get together to review overdose fatalities," the presenter said.
Police Chief Dan Thompson was present and was identified as a participant the city would send to the review group; the presenter added that the fire department and emergency medical services also play a significant role in overdose response and would participate. The council moved and approved the agreement without dissent.
Next steps: staff will enter the agreement and identify city representatives to participate in the review group.
