The Waukesha City committee voted to install a "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop" sign at the intersection of Racine Avenue and East Broadway after staff reported a skewed approach and residents described frequent near-misses.
Public Works staff explained the intersection reconstruction and said the skewed angle reduces drivers' sight lines. Staff reviewed five years of community collision data and found five property-damage crashes in the stretch, concentrated near University Drive. "People cheat forward and it's almost a daily thing — I've picked up debris from crashes," resident Steve Nestigan Palm told the committee, noting he lives about four houses from the intersection.
Another resident, Frank Palm, said the corner can be "extremely dangerous" and suggested signage or a redesign; he proposed an island to improve sight lines. Staff said installing the cross-traffic sign would be straightforward and had no objection. The chair moved the item and the motion passed following a second and a voice vote.
Staff will install standard signage to indicate that cross traffic on Racine does not stop; no formal redesign or funding commitment for geometric changes was approved at the meeting.
