City staff say community garden will need new site after county land sale; UW Extension exploring options
Summary
Staff told the Park, Recreation & Forestry Board that a community garden adjacent to the Huber Building, in operation for more than 30 years, may need to relocate after the county moves to sell the property; UW Extension has approached the city about partnering and staff said the program would likely need about five acres.

The board was told the longtime community garden adjacent to the Huber Building will need a new site because the county is considering selling the property.
Ron explained the county’s action and said UW Extension has reached out to the city to brainstorm relocation options. “That property…the county is looking at selling and part of that mix means the community garden plot program would be looking for a home,” Ron said, noting the garden has been in place for more than 30 years and that most current participants live in the city.
Staff estimated the program would need roughly five acres for a viable relocation and said they were exploring potential sites and partners; board members suggested locations including Woodfield Park as a possibility. No formal decision was made; staff said more discussion is likely in January or February.
Why it matters: the community garden serves many local residents and will require a new location if the county’s sale proceeds. The city and UW Extension are at an early stage of evaluating options and partners.
Next steps: staff will continue discussions with UW Extension and identify potential city properties; the item may return for board discussion early next year.
