Ordinance and Licensing Committee approves Magellan's sidewalk café; bartender applicants held over

The Waukesha City Ordinance and Licensing Committee unanimously approved an extension of premises and a sidewalk café for Magellan's during its Feb. 23 meeting.

The vote came after Alderman Alicia moved to approve Magellan's extension of premises and sidewalk café “as presented,” a motion the chair recorded as seconded by Alderson Helvins Leven and Alderson Van Trieste; the committee approved the request without objection. Committee Chair called the motion approved unanimously.

Why it matters: sidewalk cafés and extensions of premises are recurring, permit‑driven items for downtown businesses and must comply with city code and any engineering requirements. Committee members noted there were no complaints in the clerk's packet and that engineering notes would be included in the application file.

Clerk and staff comments focused on standard compliance rather than new conditions. Brian, a staff member who prepared a memo on other agenda items, told the committee he had no objections based on the applicants’ records and that routine application materials were on file: “I didn’t see anything in their records that would prevent them from being issued a license,” he said when discussing bartender applicants referenced on the agenda.

Two invited bartender applicants named on the agenda — Sarah Elizabeth Evans and Lupita Roque — were not present. Committee members held both applications over to the next meeting for follow-up; staff noted a follow-up was appropriate after one applicant reportedly self‑disclosed a recent OWI that did not appear on the police check.

The committee moved quickly through other routine business and adjourned at 6:21 p.m.

The committee will revisit the held bartender applications at its next meeting; the chair asked members to be prepared to consider any additional records or clarifications at that time.
