Library staff report progress on rec-center branches and Abilene Heritage Square, set spring completion dates

Ms. Hammer, presenting the staff report, updated the Library Advisory Board on multiple library construction projects and service pilots.
She said the city and library are piloting remote lockers at new recreation center branch libraries so patrons can pick up holds when the rec center — not the library — is open. The library is also testing laptop kiosks at both rec-center locations; each kiosk will include 12 laptops that patrons can check out with a library card.
Ms. Hammer gave construction progress reports for two sites. At the Cesar Chavez facility crews are in late interior and exterior finishing stages including concrete work, installation of bollards for a dumpster pad, metal paneling, interior painting, millwork, ceramic tile, ceiling tiles and HVAC diffusers; the gym floor is fully installed. At the GV Daniels site, exterior metal panels are being applied, fencing and an exterior basketball court are in progress, carpet has been installed and protected, plumbing fixtures and interior hardware are being fitted, and construction meetings are now being held in the new library space.
On the larger Abilene Heritage Square project, Ms. Hammer reported that auditorium seating and historic-looking lampposts are installed and plaster restoration and window muntin work are underway. She provided schedule milestones: March 12 for Certificate of Occupancy, March 13 for substantial completion, March 16 owner move-in begins, April 10 final completion, and May 18 as the public grand opening (times to be announced).
The board asked no questions during the presentation. Ms. Hammer said staff will provide updates as the projects near each milestone. She noted Museum Arts Incorporated of Dallas is fabricating and installing design elements for the children's story-time area and referenced SPARK Science Center exhibits as an example of the vendor's work.
