The Waukesha Plan Commission approved final site and architectural plans for a new 5,200‑square‑foot UW Credit Union branch at 1808 Silvernail Road, a project that replaces an existing BP gas station and includes a drive‑through and on‑site parking.
Staff (Charlie) told the commission the applicants showed 24 parking spaces and requested an interpretation of the code’s calculation regarding closing rooms; staff recommended approval with conditions including an updated landscape plan that adds more robust year‑round screening (preferably evergreen or an equivalent berm with tall grasses), dimmable drive‑thru lighting to limit spillover into adjacent properties, and recording a PUD amendment before permits are issued.
PJ Theron, representing UW Credit Union, said mechanical rooftop units are hidden by an architectural screen and that, based on the institution’s experience at other branches, the proposed parking is adequate. “We feel the parking is adequate for our business needs with the amount of staff we’ll have on‑site,” Theron said.
Commissioners discussed the screening choice (vegetation versus berm), concerns about salt affecting evergreens along the highway and recommended options. A motion to approve the final site plan and architecture review subject to staff comments, additional evergreen (or berm) screening and recording a PUD amendment was moved, seconded and passed unanimously.
Staff noted that removal of fuel tanks will require Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection approval and that engineering and water utility comments must be addressed before permits are issued.
