Board warns State of the State delay will postpone 2026–27 budget finalization

Clerk and finance committee members told the Montville Township Board of Education on March 11 that a two-week delay requested by the governor for the State of the State address has delayed the district’s receipt of state aid figures and other inputs needed to finalize the 2026–27 budget.
The clerk said the district normally would have finalized the budget by this point but “we will actually not be able to do that till next week.” Committee members said Facilities and Finance met earlier and continue to refine the budget; they expect to adopt a preliminary budget in March and have materials ready for the March 17 meeting so that the board can approve submission to the county.
Board members discussed alternate funding options, noting conversations with the district’s bond company as the board evaluates capital needs under the statutory 2% tax levy cap. The superintendent summarized that the 24–25 audit was completed and the district is exploring potential revenue alternatives that might help offset fiscal constraints.
No formal budget actions were taken at the March 11 meeting; members said updated state-aid numbers are required before the board can take final action.
