OPO names three new CPRC members; commission elects Carlos Graves as chair

The Office of Police Oversight announced Sept. 24 that three applicants selected by the city manager will fill vacant Community Police Review Commission seats: Harold Powell, Lauren Pena and Lee Peterman. OPO director Gail McCant said the three selected commissioners and four alternates will receive onboarding instructions by email.

Later in the meeting, the commission conducted officer elections for the chair vacancy. After nominations and a show-of-hands vote, commissioners selected Carlos Graves as the new chair. Commissioners and staff discussed the effect of that election on the vice chair and secretary positions and noted that any resulting vacancies would be filled according to the commission’s rules.

Gail McCant confirmed that new commissioners can begin their service immediately and that required trainings are available but not required prior to beginning duties. OPO staff also outlined administrative supports (laptops provided and a process for requesting software purchases from the CPRC budget).
