Commissioners reviewed the veterans monument ad hoc committee’s progress and confirmed $50,000 of city CIP funds for preliminary design work to support fundraising.
“We have 50,000 of city funds in your capital improvement plan budget for that,” the moderator (S1) said, noting the ad hoc committee is preparing a preliminary design (charrette) to help guide fundraising. Staff told the commission an additional $150,000 was tentatively anticipated from private donations, but that the final construction cost will depend on fundraising outcomes and design decisions.
Committee members emphasized a fundraising-led approach: preliminary design will be sized to what the committee believes can be raised privately, and staff said the design will be flexible so donors know what they are funding. One committee member suggested a plaza-style design rather than a large sculptural structure to keep costs manageable and appeal to a broad donor base.
Next steps: the ad hoc committee and the landscape architect will run a charrette to produce preliminary design options; staff will return to the commission with a concept and fundraising plan before approving full design and construction contracts.
