The DeSoto City Council on Feb. 3 voted unanimously to approve a resolution authorizing submission of a grant application to the Office of the Governor seeking $99,000 to fund the city’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection system.
A city public‑safety representative explained the city is pursuing state criminal justice grant funding to support the program, saying the system improves response time and situational awareness for incidents of gunfire. Council members asked when the city would learn whether the grant was awarded; a staff representative said decisions are typically returned by August or September but have in past years arrived as late as November. Staff said, if necessary, the department would temporarily fund start‑up through a federal forfeiture account while awaiting grant award.
Council Member Leticia Hughes moved approval and the motion passed unanimously.
The resolution authorizes staff to submit the application; the council took no immediate budget appropriation beyond the grant request and will address funding if and when the award is made.
