Committee votes to remove local-residency requirement for community grants

Summary
The Measure K Oversight Committee unanimously approved a motion to eliminate the requirement that grant applicants be local residents, allowing organizations outside Gonzales City to apply if their programs directly benefit city residents.
The Measure K Oversight Committee on Feb. 24 voted to remove a local-residency requirement from the community grant criteria, enabling organizations based outside Gonzales City to apply for grants if their programs directly affect city residents.
A committee member noted the provision had been discussed previously and said changing the language would let groups such as Save the Whale apply in future cycles even if they are not city residents. The chair observed similar practices on other grant panels and cited examples where out-of-county organizations ran programs that served the local community.
A motion to eliminate the residency requirement was made, seconded and approved unanimously. Committee members directed staff to carry the revised language forward for inclusion in program materials and in the recommendation that will go to the Gonzales City Council.
Committee members said the intent is to focus eligibility on whether a program benefits Gonzales residents rather than on the applicant’s home address; staff will return proposed revised language for formal inclusion in grant documents.
