Resident urges planning board to avoid deed restrictions tying housing to employers

She said tying housing to a job through deed restrictions could make it harder for low‑wage workers to leave unsuitable jobs or pursue higher paying positions because they would also need to find new housing.
"If deed restrictions were on the table for these accessory units, I believe that the language should be broadened to something along the lines of, Dare County resident, or employed in Dare County instead," McCubbins said, adding that she expected the topic to return to the board later in the year and urging members to be mindful of impacts on vulnerable households.
Board members and staff acknowledged the comment; staff noted the accessory‑dwelling discussion will continue under future agenda items and that any changes would need to reflect the town’s authority and code framework.
