Nags Head breaks ground on combined wellness center and seasonal staff housing

Town leaders and staff gathered Sept. 3 to mark the groundbreaking for a new combined wellness center and employee housing building, a phase-one element of the town hall campus master plan.
Mayor Kahoon said the town closed its previous wellness center because of extensive mold and moisture issues and emphasized the new facility’s role in retaining staff. "We have about 120 employees," the mayor said, noting roughly half are public safety staff and that the town is pursuing housing to support seasonal ocean-rescue and other staff. The town expects the combined facilities to house roughly two-thirds of seasonal staff when complete.
Town Manager Andy thanked the departmental committee and consultants who led design and procurement work and said bids were “surprisingly well within our budget” with construction expected to begin in September. David Ryan and the design team from Oakley Collier Architects and AR Chesson were introduced and thanked for their roles in design and construction oversight.
What happens next: Staff said financing is being finalized and construction will proceed once contracts are executed; staff will provide procurement and construction updates to the board as the project progresses.
