At the Feb. 18 City Commission meeting a resident of the Ranches, Mark Kesten, told commissioners he has "three mounds of dirt" at the end of his cul-de-sac that have been there for months and called them an "eyesore." Kesten described concerns about partial dredging of the canal near his street, saying the work appears to stop at a culvert and leaves part of the canal unattended, and he asked staff to investigate whether that limited dredging is appropriate.
Kesten also said recently paved roads east of his property appear to be pitched toward private properties instead of toward the canals, which he said could cause drainage to flow onto yards rather than into the canal system. He asked the city to review the grading and the canal work and suggested the dirt piles should be moved onto private property if appropriate.
Mayor Walker and staff indicated they had discussed Kesten's concerns previously and said staff (referred to during the meeting as "Carlos") would follow up. No formal action or vote was taken during the public-comment period; the commission's subsequent agenda proceeded with planned procurement and ordinance items.
The meeting record does not show further detail about the contractor or project responsible for the dirt piles or the canal work; staff follow-up is needed to identify whether the piles are on public property, which contractor placed them and whether additional dredging or road regrading is required.
