The Nags Head Board of Commissioners on Jan. 7 approved a voluntary residential reflective address sign program intended to help emergency responders find addresses more quickly.
Chief Wells described the program and said signs would be green, reflective, and available for $30 plus taxes; properties with large setbacks could receive a sign mounted on a 4x4 post. The program will be voluntary and cost‑neutral after startup, and residents will be able to request signs through the town website with options for self‑installation or town installation. Chief Wells recommended outreach to property managers and contractors to encourage participation.
Commissioners expressed support, suggested distributing signs when contractors are on site and reaching out to homeowners associations, and discussed using public education and firefighter installations as visible demonstrations. The motion to add the fee to the town’s fee schedule passed by voice vote.
The town will publish the fee and request workflow online and track participation; staff described the program as a public‑safety enhancement rather than a mandatory regulation.
What’s next: Administration and the Fire Department will create the online request process, finalize installation options and begin outreach to homeowners and property managers.
