Planning commission urges Board to preserve extra at‑large seat after redistricting

Commissioners discussed a draft ordinance the Board of Supervisors will consider on May 27 to change the planning commission’s composition following redistricting. Mr. Randolph told the panel the ordinance would amend composition to seven members — one from each of five election districts, one governing‑body liaison and one at‑large member — reflecting the county’s change from seven to five election districts.
Several commissioners expressed concern that reducing members would increase workload and might leave some outer localities without voice. One commissioner moved that the commission recommend keeping an additional at‑large seat to retain an eight‑member body and broaden representation; the motion was seconded and the commission voted unanimously to forward that recommendation to the Board.
Mr. Randolph reiterated that state code allows five to 15 members and that the Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing and make the final decision. Commissioners were encouraged to attend the Board meeting to present the planning commission’s recommendation.
