Glendora Unified honors two National Merit semifinalists and names coach a CIF "Champion of Character"

The Glendora Unified School District Board of Education on Oct. 28 recognized two Glendora High School students who were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists and honored longtime coach and teacher Gordon Hamlow with the CIF Jim Staunton "Champion for Character" award.
Principal Norrell (identified in the meeting) introduced Carter Prince, who was described as taking multiple AP courses with a weighted GPA the presenters gave as 4.44 and who plans to major in plant science, and Dia Ravi Shankar, described as taking five AP courses with a weighted GPA reported as 4.65 and a perfect 1,520 PSAT score that qualified her as a semifinalist. Superintendent DeGrazia and board members congratulated both students on the national recognition.
The board also presented the CIF "Champion for Character" coaches award to Gordon Hamlow, a Glendora High School alumnus who returned to the district staff in 2018. Presenters highlighted Hamlow—or building a program focused on teamwork and character, noting the CIF Southern Section recognition and his classroom contributions teaching students who struggle with math.
"He demonstrates daily the importance of being a member of our school community," one presenter said in describing Hamlow's impact. Coach Hamlow gave brief remarks thanking family members in attendance and the board presented a commemorative token and photographs.
The recognitions were ceremonial and did not require board action beyond acknowledgment. The board also used the agenda slot to thank volunteers and highlight school events tied to recent PTA and foundation activities.
