During the Nov. 30 meeting, the commission discussed outstanding planning items related to flood risk. The chair reminded members that updated FEMA flood maps, previously raised in April 2024 discussions, need to be incorporated into the county’s comprehensive plan. Reagan Prince confirmed staff is tracking the maps and will present them to the commission with a recommendation for the board of supervisors to adopt the updates.
Prince also told the commission the Department of Conservation and Recreation provided a model floodplain ordinance for local use. "We received the model ordinance from the Department of Conservation Recreation," he said, and staff will make any necessary revisions to tailor the model to Southampton County’s needs. Prince said he would aim to place a draft ordinance on a December or January agenda for review.
Commissioners asked staff to keep the item on the radar so the county does not forget to integrate new floodplain information into the comprehensive plan and local code.
