Jim Colt, president of the Parks and Recreation Board, told the DDC on Feb. 12 that the ARC Aquatic and Recreation Center is nearly ready and expected to open on schedule in April, with a ribbon‑cutting tentatively set for April 11. "That's almost it's going to be ready to go on time in April," Colt said, and he urged the DDC to help with marketing and developing amenities around the center.
Colt described program and marketing plans: a project website (desototexas.gov/arc) with tour scheduling is live, tours are being held for stakeholders, and a promotional campaign will include Clear Channel digital billboards, movie‑theater streaming ads, community pop‑ups and school and regional partnerships. Staff noted a membership promotion of 25% off regular rates during the launch period.
Board members asked about jobs and operations. City staff estimated roughly 53 positions associated with ARC but said some positions will transfer from existing roles and that the exact full‑time/part‑time mix will be supplied later. The parks board flagged the need for surrounding retail and food options to support visitors and asked the DDC to help coordinate short‑ and long‑term development.
Colt and staff also said FIFA representatives may visit to discuss small soccer‑pitch investments and broader engagement. The board agreed to continue collaboration with the city manager's office, the parks board and council liaisons to align marketing and strategic development before and after the April opening.
