Jackson’s Town Council on Jan. 20 approved a revised joint letter asking the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) to evaluate and act on near‑term pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements along the high‑injury network, particularly at the Cache and Broadway (US‑89) corridor where a recent fatal crash occurred.
Charlotte Fry, county transportation manager, said staff worked with town and county representatives to refocus the letter on tactical near‑term countermeasures, requested a WYDOT warrant study for safety improvements, and proposed creating a safety evaluation working group to refine countermeasures and assemble implementation project bundles for future Safe Streets for All grants.
“Our intent was to keep it very focused on the most recent fatal crash at Glenwood and Broadway and ask...what tactical steps we could take together to address the risk of further crashes,” Fry said. The draft also highlights the role of enforcement and education (state highway patrol, legislative action) and asks WYDOT to consider community safety outcomes in statewide project scoring.
A public commenter on the call voiced support for immediate implementation of safety‑action plan elements and identified 13 intersections on the corridor from Creekside Market to High School Road as priorities.
Councilor Speer moved to approve the letter as presented, subject to minor staff edits; the motion passed unanimously. Staff will coordinate the draft with Teton County so the county can consider it at its Jan. 26 meeting before sending a joint letter to WYDOT.
