DeSoto honors public library and local restaurants with awards

The DeSoto City Council presented a mayoral commendation to the DeSoto Public Library for a statewide excellence award and recognized local food businesses for high inspection scores during its Feb. 16 special meeting.
Council member Parett Parker presented a mayoral commendation on Feb. 16 recognizing the DeSoto Public Library for receiving the 2025 Achievement of Library Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association.
"I am peacock proud of this library," Parker said as she read the commendation, which credited the library for innovative programming, digital inclusion and outreach to underserved residents. Representatives of the library thanked the council, cited staff members present and said the award belongs to the community and the library’s employees.
The council also presented the city’s annual food establishment awards. Environmental Health Manager John Malvern said the awards honor businesses that scored 97 or above on two consecutive unannounced food inspections. Malvern called the recognition an opportunity to "showcase some business owners and food establishment operators in our city who have gone above and beyond the call of excellence." Winners named included local franchise and independent operators such as Smoothie King, Starbucks (I‑35 and West BeltLine locations), McDonald’s (Hampton Road and I‑35 locations), Jack in the Box, Chick‑fil‑A, and others; Malvern read the award plaque language and invited recipients to gather for a group photo.
The presentations were ceremonial; no formal votes or policy actions were taken. The council recessed the awards portion and moved on to a full agenda of financial and operational reports.
