Council gets update on Knight Road roundabout and Nitro trail; Metro may fund up to $2 million

Shashi Kumar, assistant city manager, updated the City Council on metro‑funded transportation projects, including two Henry Watts/Plantation Road segments and a proposed roundabout at Knight Road and Henry Watts. Kumar said the Metro agreement was executed in November and that Metro has “committed funds not to exceed $2,000,000” toward the roundabout.
Kumar said design work is expected in 2026 and that right‑of‑way acquisition and construction could follow in 2027, noting the consultant contract’s first phase will identify any parcels needed for the project. He described an east‑side Nitro trail concept intended to link Hightower High School, Town Center, the metro parking garage and areas south of Nitro to improve walkability, and estimated that trail costs could be “about 5 plus million dollars.”
Council members pressed staff on the timeline, right‑of‑way process and funding: Kumar said staff is coordinating two consultant efforts, will include parcel identification in the consultant scope, and is pursuing multiple funding sources including Metro and a grant application to AGAC (as stated in the meeting). The council was told the Metro funding would not use local tax dollars.
The update was informational; staff said it hopes to bring the design contract for authorization at a March meeting and will return with more detailed scope and right‑of‑way information.
