Committee approves amendment to license‑plate contest to celebrate Lake Superior agate

Rep. Gottfried moved and the Environment Committee adopted a D‑E amendment to House File 3699 that adds a time certain for a license‑plate design contest, requires a Minnesota artist to produce the winning design and prohibits the use of artificial intelligence in creating the plate.
Lars Leafblad, a Shoreview resident and small‑business owner who helped propose the idea, told members he supports focusing the contest on the North Shore and the Lake Superior agate, noting a strong statewide community of rockhounds and local events celebrating the gem.
"By voting yes on this legislation, you're voting support a geological catalyst for cross generational memory making and community building across our state," Leafblad said.
The committee placed HF 3699, as amended, on the general register.
