The Menomonee Falls Planning Commission unanimously approved a sign exemption request on Aug. 5 to allow Quietwood Subdivision’s developer to install a 25-square-foot monument sign where village code limits sign content area to 15 square feet.
Planner Amy Bennett told the commission the applicant asked the commission to waive a public hearing because the Parade of Homes begins soon and the sign is time-sensitive. Bennett said the applicant submitted alternate designs that would comply with the 15-square-foot content-area definition—by stacking text in a single rectangle—but the Architectural Control Board and staff preferred the larger, single-sign design for character reasons.
Rob Williams, the project designer, explained the village code’s content-area definition requires measuring the sign as a single rectangle and that the preferred design’s lettering creates shapes that do not fit strictly into a single 15-square-foot rectangle even though the visible letter forms are comparable in area.
Commissioner Chris Rollins moved to waive the public hearing and grant the sign exception subject to a signed permit application; the motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.
