Council approves bathroom renovation at Fire Station 6 to add ADA facilities and individual bathrooms

City leaders approved a contract on Feb. 12 to renovate the main bathroom at Fire Station 6, a two-company station built in 1981, to create three individual restrooms including one ADA-compliant facility and updated plumbing.
Fire Chief Candy Flores described long-term plumbing problems and the lack of privacy and female facilities at Station 6. "It has not had any kind of redesign since opening 45 years ago," Chief Flores said, outlining a full tear-out to the studs, plumbing replacement and construction of individual bathroom units with showers, sinks and an ADA restroom.
Flores said crews will reassign from Station 6 to Station 9 the week of March 2; renovations are projected to take roughly six weeks with an anticipated completion in April. Funding will come from the Fire Apparatus Fund and will be offset by equipment purchases and fund balances from Station 9 apparatus purchases.
After a brief public hearing with no speakers, council moved and approved the contract by voice vote.
