Public hearing held on proposed Fort Bend Event Center; final consideration continued to Feb. 11

Planning staff presented a request on Jan. 14 from Kalusa Inc. to amend Specific Use Permit No. 169 to allow a place-of-assembly use for a proposed Fort Bend Event Center near the Fort Bend County Annex and Library in Sienna. The agenda identified Lance Turner, Kalusa Inc., as the applicant.
Staff described the SUP amendment as a clarification to allow a place-of-assembly use within the existing SUP language. The proposed event center would occupy roughly 16,500 square feet, include an assembly hall, an outdoor pavilion and conference rooms, and hold approximately 600 people. Staff said notices were mailed to property owners within 250 feet and that one protest letter had been received so far. Staff told commissioners that state posting requirements would mean an additional public hearing and that final consideration is scheduled for the Feb. 11 commission agenda and tentatively scheduled for City Council on Monday, Feb. 16.
An applicant representative presented the project and emphasized existing on-site parking and prior voter-approved park bond funding that supports the project. With no members of the public signed up to speak, the commission closed the public hearing by motion and agreed to postpone final action to the Feb. 11 agenda for further consideration.
