Missouri City's Planning & Zoning Commission voted on Jan. 14 to approve a park zones map amendment that reduces the city's park-zone classifications from 13 to 4.
Parks and Recreation staff said the consolidation is intended to increase flexibility in how parks-dedication funds are used, better align zones with strategic growth plans and achieve administrative efficiencies. Staff noted some existing zone boundaries must remain intact to preserve previously dedicated funds and explained the revised zones are intended to support improved connectivity among parks, trails and homeowners associations.
"We're going from 13 zones to 4 zones," Parks Director Donnie Hayes told the commission, adding the change supports flexibility for funding and aligns with the city's growth strategy. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about small map lines and how funds already in discrete zone "pots" would be handled; staff said those funding pools must remain intact where previously dedicated.
After discussion, the commission made and seconded a motion to approve the map amendment and the chair reported the motion carries. The commission's approval advances the map change for any required next steps in the city's approval process.
