Parks division reports: Sears Pavilion rebuilt, recreation events selling well, zoo expansion under way

Division managers updated the Parks Board on maintenance, recreation programming and zoo capital work.
Jesus, parks division manager, said crews completed reconstruction work on the Sears Pavilion after a fire and that Abilene will host the West Region rodeo and workshop this year. He emphasized maintenance tasks for fields, including aeration and grading, as essential to player safety.
Anne Hall, recreation division manager, reported busy activity at recreation centers: two new managers started work, a father-daughter luau sold more than 400 tickets, and senior-center programming continues with planned events ahead. Hall said staff are preparing for spring and summer programming and new on-site activities for seniors.
Jesse Pottebaum, zoo director, reviewed fundraising and programming history for recent holiday events and said he expects construction for a rhino-yard expansion to take roughly 465 days with a target completion around early June 2027. He said one rhino (Uhuru) returned to Fossil Rim and that the Crow Group will serve as the general contractor for the multi-species expansion.
