East Windsor district honors a dozen educators in Governor’s recognition

The East Windsor Regional School District honored 12 educators at its March board meeting, naming two honorees from each school as local finalists for the Governor’s Educator of the Year recognition and announcing a county-level luncheon scheduled for April 30.
Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Samantha Feliceta opened the ceremony, saying the program accepts nominations from colleagues, parents and students and is evaluated by a building-level committee using a rubric. “Just being nominated is a huge feat considering we have such an amazing staff in this district,” she said.
Principals praised individual honorees for instructional leadership and student support. At Ethel McKnight Elementary, the principal cited Lauren Leone, the district’s BCBA, for her work on individualized behavior plans and staff coaching. Rachel Cunningham was honored as the building’s Governor’s Educator of the Year for her small-group instruction and leadership, the principal said.
At Walter C. Black Elementary the assistant principal recognized Carmen Velasquez Garcia as Educational Specialist of the Year for her work in self-contained special education. The principal at the same school named Jacqueline (Jackie) Schwenker as teacher of the year for leadership in STEM instruction and schoolwide programs.
Other school leaders highlighted honorees’ roles in counseling, arts and athletics, special education and curriculum leadership. The board invited honorees and district leaders to a group photo and recessed briefly so families and staff could celebrate.
The full list of honorees and the district’s announcement will be included in the official meeting minutes available from the board secretary. The board noted the county recognition luncheon on April 30 at The College of New Jersey and said invitations would follow.
