Council introduces ordinance to set 50-foot minimum lot width

The City Council opened a public hearing and introduced an amendment to the land-use ordinance that would set a minimum lot width of 50 feet.
Mr. Holt, invited by the mayor to explain the proposal, told the Council the change responds to “several issues where we had nonconforming lots that were not meeting the minimum width requirements.” He said that left property owners with lots they could not build on. “I took the issue to the planning commission, and they provided a recommendation to you all to create a minimum lot width of 50 feet,” Holt said.
Council members voted to introduce ordinance 260309-1 for first reading; the ordinance was not voted on today and will be returned to the Council at a future meeting for final action. No public speakers against or for the amendment were recorded during the hearing.
If adopted in a later meeting, the ordinance would change the city’s zoning standards to allow previously nonconforming parcels to meet a clarified minimum width and potentially enable building or redevelopment on those parcels. The Council did not take a final vote on the ordinance at this session; introduction simply schedules the ordinance for a subsequent vote.
