The board voted to advertise for a vacancy on the Hall County Weed Authority after a longtime member, Francis Hannon, passed away. The motion to advertise the open position and begin interviews (with appointments to start April 7) passed; the board also scheduled a discussion in two weeks on whether to abolish the independent weed authority and fold its duties into the county board.
One commissioner argued the current weed authority structure is antiquated and that abolishing it could increase efficiency and reduce duplicative budgeting work. "If it came back to the board we'd have seven board members instead of five... The meeting would be televised," a commissioner said while raising concerns about additional elections and compensation ($3,000 a year and mileage for members was discussed).
Another commissioner recommended delaying appointment consideration until the board decides whether to retain the authority as an independent entity because two positions are up for election this year and administrative changes could affect fairness to incumbents. The board agreed to advertise the vacancy now and place the potential structural change on a future agenda so voters and candidates have notice.
Commissioners asked staff to include the vacancy advertisement in public notices and to prepare the interviews and appointment timeline for early April.
