Summary
Commissioners authorized staff to draft lease terms and advertise for bids for the old Precinct 3 barn and yard, aiming to have a private lessee handle upkeep and possibly provide modest revenue; the motion passed unanimously.
Cooke County commissioners on Thursday agreed to move forward with drafting lease terms and advertising a potential long-term lease for the old Precinct 3 barn and yard in Precinct 3.
Commissioner Hart introduced the proposal and said the county uses some of the site but has older equipment there and would prefer to have a private party take over maintenance. "I was gonna bring this in front of the court just to kinda get a ball rolling on it," Hart said, describing the goal as reducing county maintenance burdens and generating some income.
Hart said the plan could fence the front portion — roughly "about 2 acres, maybe 2 and a half acres" — for lease while retaining several acres in the back for county use. He also suggested including standard commercial lease conditions such as insurance and clear restrictions (for example, prohibiting on-site tire dumping). "I think I'd get with the county attorney or somebody, kinda write something up like a lease and have all that identified," Hart said.
Commissioner Snuggs seconded the motion to prepare a description of the contract and return it to the court for review and a future vote to advertise and accept bids. The court approved the motion, 5–0.
Next steps: staff will work with the county attorney to draft lease language and bring a formal contract or solicitation back to the court for final approval and advertising. The record did not specify a timeline for returning with a draft or a minimum bid amount.
