Mayor Jane Hewson proclaimed November 2025 as Small Business Saturday in San Marcos and named the day San Marcos Legacy Business Day, citing downtown figures and the city’s Main Street support program.
In the proclamation, Hewson noted Downtown San Marcos is home to nearly 300 locally owned businesses employing more than 2,300 people. She highlighted the San Marcos Main Street program’s work, saying it has distributed more than $132,000 in microgrants to 86 small businesses since 2012, and referenced national spending estimates for Small Business Saturday in 2024.
Josie Faleta, downtown manager, introduced Sand Market, which she said was recently named the best downtown business in Texas for cities with populations over 50,000. A representative of that business thanked the community for support and emphasized that money spent locally “stays here in San Marcos.”
Allison Brake, the city’s Historic Preservation Officer, said this is the legacy program’s second year and that the roster increased from five businesses in year one to six in year two, and encouraged residents to nominate businesses that have operated 20 years or more. Addison Hein, the city’s business retention and expansion coordinator, said city staff stand ready to help legacy businesses and urged wider participation in the program.
The city honored multiple legacy businesses during the ceremony, recognizing Bobcat Movers (20 years), Mochas and Jabas (22 years), Green Guy Recycling (30 years), San Marcos Veterinary Clinic (35 years), City Bakery (36 years), McCoy's Building Supply (53 years) and Sunset Bowling Lanes (66 years). Owners and representatives accepted awards and offered brief remarks about the role of their businesses in the community.
Hewson closed the program by inviting winners to collect proclamations, join a group photo and participate in a post-ceremony reception with bottled water and donuts outside.
