In prepared remarks, she thanked her family, her campaign team, city staff and public-safety personnel, and said the people of Leander had "spoken" in the special election that placed her in office.
Thompson placed the moment in historical context, noting efforts she has led such as the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. march and a Juneteenth celebration; she also cited statewide figures about mayoral representation for women and Black Texans to underscore the significance of the election.
Commissioner Trevillion presided over the oath and presented Thompson to the audience. A prayer that preceded the oath named Thompson and praised her civic work; the invocation also thanked the Leander Police Department, fire and EMS personnel, and the Leander Independent School District.
Councilmembers offered brief congratulatory remarks. A councilmember representing Place 1 said they had been impressed by Thompson’s candor and experience; another called the day "historic" and expressed optimism about the council’s ability to work together. Mayor Pro Tem Becky Ross said she was proud to call Thompson a friend and looked forward to working with her.
Thompson noted the city had obtained a proclamation recognizing Black History Month and closed by telling those assembled, "Let's get to work." The mayor announced the meeting ended at 6:57 p.m.
