The Conestoga Valley Board discussed a proposed non‑school‑sponsored summer trip to Germany during its March 9 meeting and heard questions from directors about outreach and student safety.
Superintendent Dr. Hartman said the district is not seeking approval of the trip itself—because it is non‑school‑sponsored—but rather permission to advertise and market the opportunity in district channels in accordance with an updated policy (Policy 1.21). “We’re not seeking approval for the trip…we’re seeking approval to advertise and hang up posters for it,” he said.
Trip organizer Mr. Seigert answered board questions about interest levels, fundraising and logistics. He said he has several students interested but has not conducted a formal poll of total numbers. The organizer said ACIS provides an online fundraising tool for participants. He said the trip is intended for grades 10–12 (planned as sophomores through seniors) and that, per the tour company, the company will provide an additional chaperone for every six students.
Directors pressed for clarity about itinerary details, chaperone funding and leader professional development; Mr. Seigert said his expenses are covered and that he plans to complete leader professional development. One member cautioned about taking younger students to emotionally sensitive sites and urged ensuring parents understand the nature of visits to places such as Dachau.
The board did not vote on the request at the March 9 meeting; the item will be placed on the consent agenda for next week with the stated clarification that the trip is currently in preliminary planning for 2027.
