Board approves personnel and consent items, honors student science winner and hears teachers’ concerns

The Columbia County School Board approved personnel items and the consent agenda, recognized student achievements in the district science fair and heard public comment about staff apprehension and budget communication.

During the meeting the board unanimously approved a motion to accept the personnel items listed on the agenda and the addendum. The consent agenda — including additional administrative items on the addendum — was also approved with no discussion.

Valerie Ledford, a teacher at Columbia High School, told the board that student Shreya Patel earned first place in the biomedical sciences category, first place overall in high-school biology, the Lindsay Saunders Outstanding Presentation Award and the Regeneron Biomedical Science Award; Ledford said Patel also earned finalist invitations to the Genius Olympiad at Rochester Institute of Technology and the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix.

"These two finalist spots...are extremely competitive to earn," Ledford said, describing the student’s achievements and encouraging board members to congratulate her.

During public comment, teacher and parent Vicky Garrett said many staff members are "apprehensive" and feel they receive conflicting or insufficient information about district matters, and she asked whether board members used opportunities during the recent legislative session to raise concerns affecting schools.

The board’s members used their allotted comments to praise student performers, thank teachers and staff, and welcome the selected RFQ firm. The chair closed the meeting and adjourned for the night.

Next steps: staff will return to the board with Phase 1 documents related to the Columbia High School RFQ selection and continue routine personnel and consent administration.
