Gallatin County adopts four rural speed-limit ordinances

The Gallatin County Commission on Sept. 2 adopted four second-reading ordinances that lower posted speed limits on four county roads.
Deputy County Attorney Leigh Ann Certain summarized each ordinance and said county engineer Levi Yuen (also spelled Ewen in the record) conducted site visits and recommended lower limits based on road characteristics and adjacent land uses. "Levi Yuen'...has determined that a speed limit of 40 miles per hour is reasonable and safe," Certain said regarding Wooden Shoe Road; she later described 35 mph recommendations for Cold Smoke Drive, Nayanuki Drive and Madison Road.
Each ordinance includes a legislative-finding section referencing a speed-limit petition filed with the Clerk and Recorder, a statutory authority section allowing the commission to set limits, and a penalty section making violations misdemeanors. Certain said the ordinances would take effect 30 days after approval provided appropriate signage is placed.
Commissioners asked for and received no public comment on the ordinances; each was moved and approved on a voice vote.
