Corte Madera approves up to $60,000 for free summer swim program at Redwood High School

Town staff and Jeremy Engman of Summit Aquatics described program elements that include weekday lap swim slots, free weekend youth swim lessons targeting low‑income residents, a Sunday community swim program (about 16 Sundays), and aqua‑aerobics classes favored by seniors. Staff said the 2025 program budget is about $59,322, roughly $3,000 higher than 2024 due in part to increased insurance costs and an added Sunday aqua‑aerobics class.
Council members asked about nonresident participation and whether charging for laps might be appropriate; staff said prior small fees produced negligible revenue and created administrative issues, and that free access better met equity goals and boosted participation. Town staff also said the Redwood High School site provides free space for some weekend programming while weekday lap swim sessions incur a rental fee; staff indicated they would continue to seek partner contributions to offset town costs and pursue modest reimbursement or grant support where feasible.
The council approved the resolution by unanimous vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize the agreement, continue outreach to potential partners or grantors to offset costs, and return program metrics to the council in future reports.
