Westin event‑space addition approved; applicant to supply LED‑screen details to council

The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a zoning change, site plan and variance to the Masonry Ordinance for an approximately 5,000‑square‑foot event venue addition at the Westin Hotel, while asking the applicant to provide detailed specifications for an inward‑facing LED screen at the project’s council hearing.

Staff presented renderings, site plans and elevations, and described the requested variance to the Masonry Ordinance (identified in staff materials). Architect Shaney Malone and Paul Gorham, CEO of the operating company, introduced the project. Gorham said the addition is intended primarily for social and corporate events that the current facility cannot easily accommodate and called the hotel’s original build a “labor of love.”

Commissioners asked about the size and visibility of the proposed LED screen and whether rooftop mechanical equipment would be screened so it is not visible except from the parking garage. The applicant said the LED screen will be inward facing and is not intended for advertising visible from the freeway or access road; they agreed to provide detailed screen dimensions and supporting materials to the City Council. The applicant described the exterior as metal paneling with paint warranties in the 30‑year range and said the LED screen, if large, could be a significant cost.

A motion (case c A26Dash0004) to approve the zoning change and site plan, noting the applicant’s commitment to present LED details at council, passed 5‑0. The item will proceed to City Council for final consideration.
