Council approves citywide Christmas morning parade route, $500 stipend for staff

The La Verne City Council unanimously approved a citywide parade route designation and a $500 stipend for participating staff for the Christmas morning event on Dec. 25, 2024.
City staff described operational plans: six routes with at least two vehicles each (a lead public-safety vehicle and a Santa vehicle), navigators to accompany drivers, route time windows to help residents know when vehicles will pass, and a mailed flyer to every household with parade information and timing. Staff said the stipend is intended to ensure adequate staffing because volunteers are limited and liability and insurance prevent residents from driving lead vehicles.
Mayor Pro Tem Johnson and other council members praised the tradition and emphasized safety and the need to recognize staff effort. "We do cherish this event as well," Council member Crosby said. Council member Lowe Lau moved to designate the streets and authorize the stipend; Mayor Pro Tem Johnson seconded and the clerk recorded a 5-0 vote.
Staff said the city budget includes $12,000 for the event (mailer, overtime or stipends and decorations) and that the stipend estimate of $500 per participant is covered in that allocation. The parade will proceed with an emphasis on safety and clearer estimated time windows for neighborhoods.
