Local coalition outlines 'Know the Law' curriculum for Dixie County schools; parks events planned

At the start of the meeting, Sheila Frierson of the Dixie County Anti-Drug Coalition described a revived and updated school curriculum called "Know the Law" that will be presented to fourth- and fifth-grade classes, followed later by sixth grade. Frierson said the program has been redeveloped to reflect changes in law and that the Dixie County Sheriff's Office will supply a trained officer to teach in classrooms.
"We want to inform the students at an early age," Frierson said, noting the course is curriculum- and evidence-based and that students who complete it will receive a T-shirt and a certificate. Frierson gave the board a copy of the materials and asked for the county's support as the program continues this school year.
Parks staff reported near-completion of parks program setup, announced a Suwannee chili cook-off on Jan. 31 and said Detroit now has a walking path and a newly installed Frisbee golf setup. Commissioners thanked staff and encouraged public attendance at events.
What happens next: Coalition and staff will continue program rollout in schools, and parks staff will provide more details at the next meeting.
