Ferndale plans DNR grant applications to renovate Linden Park

Parks and Recreation staff told the Ferndale City Council on March 9 that they plan to apply to Michigan Department of Natural Resources grants to renovate Linden Park, prioritizing accessibility upgrades and safety repairs.
The proposed scope includes demolition of outdated play equipment, new ADA-accessible playground installations, a universally accessible walking path connecting key features, full repaving and renovation of the basketball court (new hoops and rims), additional benches and companion seating, drinking fountains, and trash and recycling receptacles. Staff said the applications target the Land and Water Conservation Fund (50% hard match) and the Natural Resources Trust Fund (minimum 26% match; staff typically pursue 50% to be competitive). The grants are reimbursement-based and the city must front-match costs; local match can include other grants, in-kind DPW work, or volunteer labor.
Timetable given at the meeting: applications due April 1, an early review/withdrawal period in September, awards announced in December, and a potential construction start in 2027. Parks staff said no council action was required that night but that resolutions authorizing submission will be requested at the next council meeting.
