Deuel School District officials told trustees they will pursue free lead‑in‑water sampling after a state directive that schools test drinking fountains and cooking water fixtures in buildings built in 2014 or earlier by November 2027.
The superintendent said the district was notified at a superintendent meeting that the testing requirement applies to fixtures used for drinking or cooking in older buildings. She said the sampling vendor will provide water‑sampling kits at no cost and that remediation work discovered by testing — such as replacing fountains or piping — would be eligible for grant funds.
District staff say they are lining up weekend or summer sampling, when water can sit in pipes as required for accurate testing. "They will come in, provide all of the water samples for free," the superintendent said, adding that the district must submit fixture locations to schedule testing. She said results will be reported back to the board once available.
The board discussed the timing and grant coverage for remediation; no remediation projects were authorized at the meeting, only the testing arrangement and staffing to coordinate the samples.
