Committee backs request for free utilities at dozens of Jonesboro bus shelters; staff details lights and displays

The Jonesboro Public Works Committee voted to recommend that the full City Council request City Water and Light provide free utilities to multiple bus shelter locations under a shelter grant (Resolution 26-019).
Dr. Coleman asked whether the utilities covered lighting and the display screens. The presenter explained the shelters will include LED lighting and an LED display that shows bus arrival times as part of the shelter grant program. "What these shelters will have, they'll have an LED lighting system ... and then also an LED display screen, which will show the bus times of when the bus will arrive," the presenter said. He added the components sit inside a locked, thick metal enclosure with fans and a heater to protect electronics and a protective casing over the screen.
When asked how many bus stops the city has overall, the presenter said "we've got about a 140 approximately bus stops all over town." Committee members had no further questions and moved the resolution to the full council.
If the full council approves the request, the city will ask City Water and Light to waive utility charges at the listed shelter locations to support the shelter grant installation.
