Mesquite ISD hires Robert Boone as Horn High head football coach

The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees approved Robert Boone as the head football coach and campus athletic coordinator for John Horn High School, voting in favor during its March meeting.

Boone, introduced by district athletic staff, told the board he is "overly blessed" for the opportunity and described a three-part vision focused on developing the student-athlete mentally, physically and emotionally; preparing students for life after high school; and pursuing excellence in competition and academics. "We're gonna pursue excellence in all of those things," Boone said.

Superintendent Victor Rivera introduced the recommendation and noted Boone's decade-plus experience, including recent service as athletic coordinator and head coach at Newman Smith High School, where he led the program to multiple playoff appearances and was named coach of the year. The board moved and seconded the hiring action and approved it by voice vote.

Board members asked about Boone's expectations for winning and program standards during a brief exchange after his remarks; Boone reiterated his emphasis on student development and community involvement. The board did not amend the personnel action and did not set additional conditions beyond administrative hiring protocols.

Boone thanked district leaders, his family and coaches who mentored him, and said he looks forward to "adding to the excellence of Mesquite ISD and Horn." The district placed Boone on the agenda as an action item and the hiring will proceed per district personnel procedures.
